Field Work Crew Member
June - August 2018 • Tres Piedras, NM
What I liked
I liked being outside every day and being able to contribute to research by working with prairie dogs on a daily basis. I also learned a lot about what goes into field work and and what doing research is like. I liked seeing a new part of the country as well as we were also in southern Colorado and got to sight-see. It was definitely a great research experience and anyone interested in the field should definitely participate in fieldwork during some point in their undergrad to experience it for themselves.
What I wish was different
I wish that we were closer to some of the sites that we were at but that is just how field work is sometimes. We were also in very remote places which made getting to the grocery store very difficult. I don't think that these are things that could have really been changed, however, with the type of research we were doing as our species of prairie dog under study are in more remote places.
Advice
One piece of advice that I would have for anyone wanting to do this experience is to be fully prepared for what you are setting out to do and enjoy every moment. Try and record what you are learning and how you feel about the experience as it can help you make decisions about your future career and also learn some things about yourself.
