Garden-based Nutrition and Fitness Educator Intern

Interns will work as part of our School Garden Nutrition Education team helping to teach students about making food choices that are healthy for their bodies and our planet. Interns will have opportunities to develop curriculum, participate in connecting to community stakeholders, and work in our organic schoolyard gardens and greenhouse.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in facilitating the “Garden Club” summer camp program
  • Collaborate with staff to develop, adapt, and implement lessons and recipes using pre-approved curriculum
  • Lead groups of students in cooking healthy recipes, participating in taste-testing activities and hands-on botanical experiments
  • Assist in facilitating enriching physical fitness activities
  • Develop parent engagement strategies and prepare materials for distribution to youth and families
  • Assist in managing school gardens and greenhouse
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiastic about learning and teaching
  • Able to set a positive example for young people
  • Passionate about improving access to and knowledge of healthy foods and lifestyles
  • Eager to assist in low-income communities
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Courteous, personable, and respectful when working with the public
  • Transportation to programming, either personal vehicle or knowledge of CATA bus system
  • Prior experience with education, plant-based cooking, nutrition, urban organic gardening, community development, and social justice, desired but not required
  • The ability to whistle on command and a large repertoire of kid-friendly jokes, food puns encouraged

Time Commitment and Scheduling:

This position will require 15 - 20 hours per week. Our summer camp programming sessions will occur on weekday mornings for 10 weeks. This internship opportunity will run June 5 - August 25, 2017. We are flexible when working with school and work schedules within the framework of programming hours. Please contact our office directly for more details regarding scheduling.
