Career Peer Position Responsibilities
The Career Services Network provides career support to all MSU students in the form of career advising and exploration, building professional documents (resumes and cover letters), interview support, and more. Career Peers serve as valuable members of this team by providing drop-in services, peer perspective on career topics, and customer service. As one of the two career centers in the Network, the Career Exploration Center serves as a hub for questions and support needs. Career Peers have various responsibilities that can be broken into the core areas below.
Career Support and Advising
- Provide one-on-one and group advising on career resources and topics including, but not limited to:
- Resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searches, and creating a professional online presence
- Post regular hours for scheduled and drop-in advising each week
- Develop and provide students with the career resources available to them through the center and on the Career Services website
- Support student exploration using Focus 2 and using MSU exploration resources
- Refer and schedule students to appropriate career advisors following drop-in appointments
- Review virtual submissions to the resume drop-box and provide feedback
- Support and guide students in the use of the Career Closet and professional photos offered in the SSB
- Assist students with setting up appointments via Handshake
Student Engagement
- Collaborate with the Career Peer Leads in the planning, implementation, and hosting of programming through the Career Exploration Center
- Plan and lead tabling opportunities to provide students with awareness about career services
- Connect with student organizations to provide outreach, support, and resources, including facilitating 2 presentations per semester on career resources, LinkedIn, and resume topics
- Assist professional staff with career presentations for classes and departments
- Develop social media content and career resources using Canva for the CSN social media with support of the Career Peer Lead
- Attend and/or support the various career fairs on campus managing professional photo booth and student check-in
Operations
- Provide customer service for anyone visiting or reaching out to the Career Exploration Center
- Navigate Handshake to provide support with scheduling events, student navigation questions, and employer career fair questions
- Monitor the overall cleanliness and organization of the front desk and lobby, including stocking resources
- Assist individuals with career and campus questions
- Perform shift responsibilities to maintain the full functionality of the space
- Communicate timely by responding to Teams messages, submitting desk log at the end of each shift, and providing updates on projects
- Provide support via responding to emails on shared MSU email account
- Assist with the management of the Career Closet, including laundry process, space upkeep, outfit updates, new item intake, and student notification
Professional Development
The Career Peer position is meant to provide career and professional development. During this role, you will build professional skills in advising, communications, presenting, and more. You will develop knowledge on topics such as job search strategies, interviewing, LinkedIn, networking, building professional materials, and more. Regular training will be scheduled to identify and support new areas of development aimed at your career goals.
Position Qualifications
- Strong academic performance
- Flexible availability to work 8-10 hours weekly between 8 AM and 5 PM
- Independent worker with strong organizational, communication, customer services, and time management skills
- Available to attend staff meetings (set date/time) and training session likely set for Thursday, Aug. 27 and Friday, Aug. 28
- Available after 5pm at least twice a week to assist with presentations and career fairs
- Proven proficiency in use of MS Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
- Looking for students interested in teaching, presenting, advising

Position Compensation
- Hourly salary of $15 per hour
- (Minimum wage moves to $15 per hour in January 2026, awaiting guidance to see if this applies in August)
