Arts Internship Award Program: Crescendo Detroit

The College of Music Arts Internship Award Program is available to College of Music students only.

The award provides a $1500 scholarship for a student to complete an internship (10 hrs/week, 10 weeks) at an arts organization host site. Both graduate and undergraduate music students are eligible for these awards.

*Students are not eligible for AIAP internships after they have graduated (i.e., if you graduate in May, you are not eligible for a summer AIAP internship).

Job Description: Social Media Intern
 Location: Detroit, MI

 Reports to: Crescendo Detroit PR and Communications Consultant

About Crescendo Detroit:
Crescendo Detroit is a grassroots, neighborhood arts organization dedicated to impacting the lives of children aged 5–18 through music, dance, and arts education. Founded by Michigan State University alumni, we are committed to providing access to high-quality arts education and fostering a supportive, creative community.

Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and creative Social Media Intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in social media management, content creation, and mission-driven storytelling. The ideal candidate will be passionate about arts education and eager to contribute to our vision of community transformation through the arts.

This role requires availability on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in Detroit, as well as occasional Saturdays (approximately 12 per semester) from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM at U of Michigan's School of Music Theatre and Dance SMTD in Ann Arbor. While full attendance is not mandatory, preference will be given to applicants who can commit to at least a majority of these sessions. Some duties may be completed remotely, depending on project timelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Creation: Develop and curate engaging content (photos, videos, stories) that highlights our students, classes, and program impact
  • Social Media Management: Help manage Crescendo Detroit’s social media presence across platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok)
  • Community Engagement: Interact with followers, respond to messages, and build authentic online engagement
  • Storytelling Support: Assist in capturing interviews and testimonials from students, families, and staff for use in digital campaigns
  • Analytics and Reporting: Monitor social media performance metrics and help refine strategy based on audience insights
  • Event Support: Contribute to projects such as MSU’s leadership development weekend and Ready Set Audition Day, in collaboration with CMS Detroit and the College of Music
  • Collaboration: Work directly with our PR/marketing consultant and program team to ensure consistent and compelling messaging

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and engagement strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with content creation tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) is a plus
  • Ability to take initiative, manage deadlines, and work both independently and in collaboration
  • Interest in arts education, community impact, and creative storytelling
